"A single gram of poop contains 50 diseases, one million bacteria, 1,000 parasites, 100 worm eggs and 10 million viruses..." Brooke Borel, Let's talk crap: Getting to the bottom of a critical global health issue. TED Talk
Underwear, while originally designed for health, is a commodity in western societies. It isn't however in many communities around the world. In fact there are charities that distribute second hand underwear as it is the best they can access and some African countries have criminalised second hand underwear sales to limit the import of disease laden clothing.
For many kids in poverty, it is simply a luxury they can't afford. For all kids this results in the spread of disease, and for girls coming of age it can also mean missing school one week out of four.
We're not trying to save the world. We just believe profits can be distributed in a manner that benefits those that need it. You Buy Undies and we Give Undies. It's that simple...
Who are the founders
We're a little Aussie family who prior to starting a family took a trip to Africa and were shocked at the difference between our own living standards and the conditions of so many others.
As a teacher, Holly wanted to help the kids she met who were eager to learn, and as an enteprenuer Chris was excited by the Social Enterprise movement and was looking for an opportunity to get involved. So....
We did it ourselves and BUGU was born. Shortly after, so too was Jacko, and soon, another boy, the last of our little team.
Running a Social Enterprise, starting a family and keeping it all fun has been tricky, but each success has reminded us why and each setback has made us stronger.
And now.... Our bums are improving lives!
Who and how
We partner with communities who purchase materials and sew underwear for the local school kids. This delivers revenue to the local community as well as better health and a few smiles to the kids themselves. This community participation is core to what we wish to achieve at Buy Undies Give Undies.
